Gino-My giant rescue dog!

Gino came to me by accident, sort of. I have a rescue "cause" on facebook and work on it with my Sister. She is always posting dogs that are in kill shelters with little time left. I was posting some dogs for her on our cause and saw the cutest pitbull. Grey with grey eyes and not too big. I could not let this poor baby die and offered to foster him. well alot of people found him to be adorable and he was already "taken". So, I was offered Gino. A 98lb Bully mix. I was hesitant at first, but who am I to say who lives and who dies! He was hard to place because of his size so I agreed to FOSTER him. I will admit that I was really nervous about my decision, especially because of my tiny 7 yr old daughter. But when Gino got to our home, it was love at first site! he is gorgeous and sweet and loving and so, so smart! Not aggressive in any way and just wants to be part of the family. He is happy to sit on the couch with me and snore while I watch TV! He is so gentle with my daughter and never jumps on her and is very careful not to hurt her. Gino loves meeting new people and tummy runs are his favorite thing in the world. That and long walks! It did not take long at all for my family to decide gino was not our foster, he was our newest family member! He has brought so much happiness into our home and I am so grateful to have him and that I was able to save him. Bullies have such a bad name. But they are truly great family pets. He wants to go everywhere with us. When we go out, he goes straight to my car, always thinking I am taking him somewhere. He is quite intimidating looking, but is truly a big mushball! He even tries to sit in my lap.
There are so many dogs and cats in shelters, especially now, when people are having a hard time even caring for themselves. But there is so much that can be done to help these poor innocent animals. First of all, if you are having trouble keeping your pet due to financial problems or illness, there are resources out there that can help. Second, if you absolutley cannot keep your pet, do some research before just dropping them off at the nearest shelter. Most kill shelters do not advertise that way. They will not tell you that they don't have a lot of room and that your dog will more then likely be put down. Also, in some states, the way they are put down in unimaginable. Some use gas, others worse. I don't even want to thik about that! The best thing to do is try to contact a rescue group. Some specialize in a specific breed, others will help rehome all breeds. If you can't find a rescue, make sure the shelter you are going to is non-kill and check it out before you drop off your pet. It is sad enough that your pet is losing it's home. At least bring it someplace where it will get the care and love that it deserves and a good chance of being rehomed.
When looking to add a pet to your home, bypass breeders and pet shops. You can contact breed specific rescues if you have a peticular breed in mind. It may take time to get the exact puppy that you want, but it's so much better knowing that you rescued! Also, consider an older, already trained dog or cat. They are a lot less work and will so appreciate being freed from a shelter.
research, do your homework and you will soon find the perfect addition to your family. I did!
Feel free to contact me if you are interested in fostering or adopting a pet. I have contacts all over the country and would be more then happy to help you find that "forever friend"!
